MBB Architects – Greenwich Village School Green Roof

PS41 in Greenwich Village features New York City’s first green roof, offering an outdoor classroom that enhances the building’s energy efficiency. Known as the Greenroof Environmental Literacy Laboratory (GELL), it educates students on urban sustainability and farm-to-table agriculture. The eastern section includes solar panels, walkways, and a weather station, while the western portion supports wildlife habitats. Adding 15,000 square feet of greenery, the roof improves air quality, reduces the heat island effect, and manages stormwater runoff. It also serves as a scenic addition to the neighborhood, addressing its lack of green spaces.
